Jackie Vance and her daughter, Ama visited Ghana at the invitation of Mae Brown an anthropology professor from the Johns Hopkins University who was on sabbatical
and teaching at the University of Cape Coast. They visited the Elmina Castle, one of the largest slave castles in Africa built by the Portuguese in 1482.
While touring the female slave quarters which was directly below the governor’s living quarters, Jackie went into a reverie about the horrifying lives of the
women who lived there several hundred years ago. Jackie was a proud and hot-tempered Ashanti princess called Nana Yaa who was captured during one of
the British-Ashanti wars. After recovering from being possessed by the Brenya River god during a festival ceremony and living through another experience, Jackie and her family enjoyed the pageantry of the Elmina Bakatue festival before heading back home to the U.S.
